Early childhood reading promotion: cocon Waldtrudering is an officially certified book daycare centre

Upbringing and education

Our centre in Waldtrudering has held the official Book Daycare seal of approval since September 2024. This new certification recognises the special commitment of our facilities to promoting reading in early childhood. Further confirmation of our joint work, of which the entire team and our cocon families are very proud.

Who is behind the Buchkita seal of quality?

The Buchkita seal of approval is awarded by Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels and the German Library Association. It recognises daycare centres that are dedicated to promoting language and reading in early childhood in an outstanding way. Since the seal was launched in 2019, hundreds of daycare centres across Germany have applied with their initiatives. In 2024 alone, over 200 daycare centres submitted their projects for certification – only 61 facilities, including cocon Waldtrudering, were recognised. When making its selection, the jury emphasised innovative and exemplary projects that promote reading and encourage even the youngest children to enjoy language, books and stories.

Criteria for awarding the seal

In order to receive the seal of approval, the daycare centres had to provide evidence of comprehensive measures to promote reading. The following criteria were assessed, among others:

  • Parent work: Cooperation with parents, e.g. through reading mentors or lending libraries.
  • Diverse book projects: Campaigns for various books and book holidays.
  • Regular reading aloud: Integration of reading aloud times into everyday educational activities.
  • Well-stocked libraries: Establishment of cosy reading corners and a diverse selection of books.
  • Further training for staff: Specialised training in literacy and language development.
  • Cooperation with libraries/bookshops: Promotion of exchange with external partners.

Promoting reading in everyday life at cocon Waldtrudering

With the certification as a book daycare centre, the team at cocon Waldtrudering has now officially proven that promoting reading is an essential part of our daycare centre’s daily routine. Our creative projects and diverse activities awaken and promote a love of books in a playful and sustainable way – and in both German and English.

The children are not only read to daily, the medium of the book is integrated into everyday life in a variety of ways: in the morning circle, during special themed weeks or in numerous interactive storytelling sessions. Parents are also actively involved, e.g. through joint reading days or the exchange of book recommendations for home. The diversity of languages and nationalities in the daycare centre is particularly enriching: books and stories are used to explore cultural differences and build bridges between cultures. The focus is not only on classic children’s books, but also on works from other countries and in other languages that take the children on a little trip around the world.

In this way, we create an environment in which books not only entertain, but also inspire the imagination, impart knowledge and lay the foundations for a lifelong love of reading.

Wie fördere ich das Lesen bei Kindern?

Books in two languages: German and English

Thanks to the bilingual concept based on the immersion principle, the children experience books and stories naturally in both languages. Each group is accompanied by a teacher who only speaks English, so that the children learn the new language playfully and intuitively. This approach not only promotes language acquisition, but also intercultural understanding.

The carefully selected range of books also reflects this bilingualism, with timeless classics as well as new children’s book favourites. In this way, both languages are integrated into everyday life on an equal footing. However, our books often inspire our children far beyond the language. Here are a few examples:

  • ‘The Bunny Who Found Easter’ (Charlotte Zolotow) provided “Easter gym lessons” in which the children playfully explored forms of movement.
  • ‘Shapes’ (John J. Reiss) inspired our children to create street paintings with shapes and colours.
  • ‘Pancakes for Findus’ (Sven Nordqvist) led to baking pancakes together in the children’s kitchen.

Parents as important partners

Co-operation with parents plays a central role at cocon in both Waldtrudering and Bogenhausen. Many parents volunteer as reading mentors to read books to children – sometimes in their native language. This not only promotes language development, but also strengthens cultural diversity and a sense of community within the centre.

The award as a book daycare centre once again underlines cocon’s high quality standards – and in particular the great commitment of the entire cocon family to teaching children the joy of books from the very beginning.

‘We are proud of our team and the families who work together to ensure that our children grow up curious and open to language, books and stories. That’s what we call a living educational partnership.’
